The Basics Of Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a false tooth that is designed to fit over your trimmed natural tooth, restoring and protecting it from further damage. Your existing tooth structure will prepared to remove damaged material and provide a solid platform to which the crown can be attached.

Because crowns cover and protect your tooth all the way to the gum line, they are the preferred method for restoring teeth that have been seriously damaged by oral injuries, tooth decay, and other such dental problems.

When Are Dental Crowns Necessary?

Crowns are a common restorative dentistry treatment. They are frequently used to treat severely decayed teeth, such as large cavities that can’t be properly treated with a simple filling alone. Crowns are also used to treat teeth that have been cracked or damaged by an oral injury, and to restore teeth after root canal therapy.

In some cases, crowns may also be selected as the best option for cosmetic dental treatment. For example, it may be a better idea to treat a severely stained or misshapen tooth with a dental crown, instead of a treatment like dental bonding or a porcelain veneer.

The Dental Crown Placement Process

After you are approved for treatment, it usually takes Dr. Santo 2 appointments over a period of 2-3 weeks to place your dental crown and restore your tooth. During your first appointment with our Red Bank office, your tooth will need to be trimmed and prepared for your crown.

Dr. Santo will begin by cleaning and numbing the treatment area. Then, he will use a dental drill to remove any decayed or damaged enamel from your tooth. Once this is done, he will reshape your tooth to provide a stable platform for your crown. Next, he will take impressions of your mouth and attach a temporary resin crown to your trimmed tooth.

The impressions of your teeth will be sent to our partner dental lab. This is where your permanent porcelain crown will be built by a qualified technician. In about 2-3 weeks, your crown will be completed and sent to our office.

During your second appointment, Dr. Santo will remove your temporary crown and clean your tooth. He will check the fit of your permanent crown to make sure it sits comfortably with your natural teeth. At this stage, he can still make minor adjustments to your crown. Once everything looks good, Dr. Santo will bond the crown in place permanently with a powerful dental adhesive. Your new tooth will be cleaned and polished, and then you’ll be sent home to enjoy your new smile.

Does Getting A Crown Hurt?

Not at all. Even though you’ll need to have some of your tooth enamel removed during the process, getting a crown doesn’t involve any major surgery. It only takes a few minutes to prepare your tooth for a crown.

Our Red Bank dental team will provide numbing shots to ensure you don’t feel any discomfort as you get a crown, and keep you feeling safe and comfortable. Your tooth may feel a little bit sensitive after it’s been trimmed, but this will go away once you come back to get your permanent crown at Santo Dental Group.

What Happens If I Don’t Get A Crown?

This depends on why you need a crown. If a crown is recommended for cosmetic reasons like a severe stain that can’t be treated with dental veneers, you likely won’t experience any oral health issues if you don’t get a crown.

However, if your dentist at Santo Dental Group recommends a crown because you have a very large cavity or your tooth is broken and you don’t get a crown, it’s likely that your condition will only get worse.

A big cavity or a broken tooth can lead to a tooth infection, which is a very serious condition where the inside of the tooth is attacked by oral bacteria. This will require you to get a root canal before you get a dental crown, and this is a more invasive, expensive, and time-consuming procedure.

If your tooth is infected and you still do not get treatment, your tooth will die. During this process, you’ll have an extremely painful toothache. Your tooth may stay in your mouth or fall out after it dies. Either way, you will need to replace it with a partial denture, dental bridge, or dental implant.

If your dentist at Santo Dental Group recommends a crown, you should listen to them and get the treatment you need right away. By getting a crown right away, you can restore your smile and your tooth, prevent further complications, and avoid the pain and discomfort of a tooth infection.

How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?

Dental crowns are one of the most long-lasting dental treatments available at the dentist. Porcelain crowns usually last between 10-20 years, and can last even longer with proper dental care. At Santo Dental Group, we use the latest materials and work with reputable, professional dental labs to ensure your crown looks and feels perfect, and lasts as long as possible.

One of the most important things that you can do to keep your dental crown in great shape is to maintain proper at-home oral hygiene. Brushing and flossing consistently reduces your risk of cavities and gum disease, which could both lead to premature failure of the crown or damage to the tooth.

You also should come and see your dentist at Santo Dental Group in Red Bank for a checkup every six months. Routine teeth cleanings and oral exams allow Dr. Michael Santo, Dr. Miles Santo, or Dr. Katelyn Domingues to keep an eye on your oral health and look for signs of tooth decay, loose crowns, and other such issues. This helps keep your mouth healthy and strong.
